Economics Undergraduate Scholarship
The Economics Department offers the Robert S. Roth Scholarship in Economics, an award of up to $2,500, to promising students in the field of Economics who are active, full-time majors at Stony Brook University.
The scholarship is intended to provide undergraduate students with support to continue their education in economics.
Eligibility Requirements
- Full-time enrollment as an undergraduate student in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Declared Economics as a major.
- Academic achievement as evidenced by a high GPA. A GPA above 3.5 is preferred; the minimum GPA is 3.0.
- Demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services. Students must file a FAFSA form to be considered eligible.
Application Materials
- A completed online application.
- A personal statement of no more than 600 words explaining your case for the scholarship.
Possible topics include:
- How you have demonstrated academic excellence beyond your GPA.
- How you have contributed to the economics major by organizing or helping other economics majors.
- What challenges you have overcome that make you a strong candidate for the scholarship.
- Why you decided to declare an Economics major and what fascinates you about the study of economics.
- How your current studies relate to your future professional or intellectual development.
- The name of a current faculty member who has agreed to act as your reference.
Selection Process
Winning candidate(s) will be selected by the award committee on the basis of GPA, both University and major GPA, the personal statement, faculty recommendations, and demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services.
