Transfer Credit Guidelines
Students may transfer no more than four economics courses taken at another institution toward the Economics major.
If you plan to take an economics course at another institution, you must obtain approval from the Department of Economics before enrolling. Please provide the course description from the institution's catalog for review.
If the course has already been evaluated by the Department of Economics, additional departmental approval is not required.
A grade of C or higher must be earned for any course applied toward the Economics major, whether taken at Stony Brook or another institution. Most business courses will not transfer as Economics credit, but might be accepted toward a business major or minor.
Materials Required for a Transfer Evaluation
If you have already completed an economics course at another institution and would like to transfer the credit to Stony Brook University, please submit:
- The course description from the college catalog and any supporting materials that describe the course content, such as the textbook, exams, assignments, or syllabus.
- An official or unofficial transcript showing successful completion of the course.
- A completed Transfer Course Evaluation Form, available from the Transfer Office or the Economics Undergraduate Office.
Previously Evaluated Courses
If a course has already been evaluated by the Department of Economics, you do not need to submit another evaluation request.
The schools listed below offer courses that may transfer to Stony Brook for Economics (ECO) credit. Please consult each institution's website for current course offerings. This list is provided as a reference and is not exhaustive.
- Baruch College
- City College
- Hunter College
- Long Island University C.W. Post
- Nassau Community College
- Queens College
- St. John's University
- Suffolk County Community College
- SUNY Farmingdale State College
- SUNY Old Westbury
How Transfer Credit May Apply
An economics course completed at another institution may satisfy requirements for the Economics major even if an equivalent course is not regularly offered at Stony Brook, provided the course content falls within the field of economics.
Approved courses may transfer as either upper-division ECO credit or 100-level ECO elective credit, depending on the course evaluation. These credits may be used toward completion of the Economics major.
Courses outside the field of economics: Courses from other disciplines that may satisfy Economics major requirements must be evaluated by the corresponding Stony Brook academic department, not the Department of Economics.
For example, if a student completes a course equivalent to MAT 320: Linear Algebra at another institution, the Mathematics Department must approve the course as MAT 320 before it can be applied toward the Economics major.
