Our Mission
Our mission is to provide mental health services to help students develop the healthy minds and skills necessary for personal, academic, and social success and safety. We encourage students to proactively seek support by reducing barriers to care. We are committed to embracing human diversity in all its forms.
Our Vision
Through integrated, goal-directed treatment that provides tools for self-knowledge and improved coping skills, we strive for our students to seek personal fulfillment and assist others as vital contributors to a sustainable community of care.
Scope of Care
The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at Stony Brook University provides brief therapy and support for students dealing with mild to moderate emotional or psychological distress. This includes common college-related concerns such as academic stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and challenges adjusting to campus life. CAPS also offers psychiatric services for these types of concerns.
Students who require long-term treatment or a higher level of care may not be best served by CAPS. In such cases, the CAPS team will work to connect students with appropriate outside providers for continued support.
